Linn County

Linn County, an E-Community as of 2008, has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century; the township of Trading Post is thought to be one of the oldest continuously-occupied locations in the state. Linn county’s border with Missouri proved very important during the Bleeding Kansas debacle, and during the subsequent Civil War. Mine Creek (six miles south of Trading Post) became the site of the only major Civil War battle in Kansas.

Though established for its lead mining, Linn County later became known for coal mining. Modern Linn County is meeting energy demands with the power plant in its second most populous city, LaCygne. Hunting and fishing are also popular industries in Linn County, with eight lakes and the famed Marais des Cygnes State Wildlife Area and National Refuge. Named “Marsh of the Swans” by early French trappers, These wildlife areas are also a favorite of bird watchers, who may glimpse bald eagles or 315 other bird species. Not counting the birds, the population of Linn County is 9,962, placing it at rank 42 out of 105 Kansas counties.
